There are many types of metadata, but the 3 most widely classified kinds are Business Metadata, Technical Metadata and Semantics Metadata.
Technical metadata describes technical systems processes, and even code. Technical metadata is extracted using some form of metadata scanner or connector/adapter.
Business metadata encompasses business knowledge such as:
